Property in Blackheath

Blackheath is so old that Roman artifacts have been dug up here. Architecturally it holds some of the most splendid Georgian, Regency and Victorian villas in south London, alongside some progressive Span flats (built by renowned architect Eric Lyons in the 1960s) overlooking Blackheath itself. The oldest Georgian houses were built c.1790 but most of the buildings sprung up after 1803 when John Cator embarked on the Cator Estate.

Today, the Cator Estate is a conservation area is around 270 acres managed by an independent freeholder who has kept unsightly road traffic signs etc to a minimum. Realms of Victorian and Edwardian mansions and townhouses teeter away from the common. Lovely.

Blackheath schools

Primary schools include the outstanding All Saints, John Ball, St Margaret’s and Brindishe Lee schools. Secondary state options are St Ursula’s, Deptford Green, Thomas Tallis, Trinity and John Roan. Independent schools such as Colfe’s, Blackheath High and Greenwich Steiner are all close.

SE3 shopping and leisure

Blackheath Common hosts many events and fairs. The fireworks display and annual Blackheath Bike and Kite Festival attract thousands. You’ll find Zippo’s Circus and various funfairs set up during school holidays and many interesting child-focused activities held at Greenwich Observatory across the heath. Culture? SE3 is awash with arty pursuits. Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and Art holds mixed ability classes and stands next to Blackheath Halls, a revamped Victorian music venue. Up the Creek comedy store is in Greenwich while various fringe theatre such as Galleon Theatre Company (Greenwich) or the Albany Theatre (Deptford) are close. There is, of course the 02 Arena as well. Oh, and the fab Laban Dance Centre at Deptford designed by the architects behind Tate Modern (Herzog and de Meuron), and winner of the 2003 Sterling Prize.

Greenwich has a snazzy Picturehouse Cinema, Greenwich Theatre, superb art, craft and antique market, Maritime Museum, Queen’s House—we could go on. Everyday activities include a David Lloyd gymnasium on Kidbrooke Park Road and umpteen cafés, restaurants, bars, gift shops and boutiques in Blackheath Village.
