Camberwell is a heady mix of housing having arguably the best Georgian and Regency architecture south of the River and fair smattering of post-war landfill. We’re talking about social housing, the kind that sprung up after WW2 bombs obliterated homes—a south east London trademark. Concrete Brutalist blocks exist mainly north of Camberwell Green (towards Elephant and Castle), with a sprinkling of low-rises between pretty Victorian streets towards Peckham.
Originally a large Saxon settlement, central Camberwell was popular with Georgian merchants who liked the proximity to central London and the idyllic country setting. Myatt’s Fields is a remarkable conservation are stuffed with large Victorian homes, while Georgian and Victorian townhouses and splendid late Regency homes can be found in the roads nearing Oval (check out Vassall Road and Camberwell New Road).

There are some superb state primary schools and two good secondary schools in Camberwell while Dulwich Foundation schools are only a 10min drive away.
SE5 shopping and leisure
Dog Kennel Hill has a Sainsbury’s, there’s a Morrison’s in central Camberwell plus it’s worth noting the organic grocer (Pretty Traditional) and butcher (William Rose) in neighbouring Dulwich both deliver.
An eclectic mix of students, artists and writers live here and café culture is strong. Time Out recently called the South London Gallery café (No.67) ‘’seriously delicious’’ while the gallery itself holds reputable exhibitions. Pubs include the Hermit’s Cave (roaring log fire in winter) and the Sun and Doves (good food, good drinks, good art).
Public transport from Camberwell
Denmark Hill trains, they’re all you need to know. This Zone 2 station will whip you into Victoria (non-stop services take 9mins) or London Bridge (about 15mins) plus Blackfriars, City Thameslink and Farringdon too. Buses galore can take you into and across London, with around-the-clock services to suit partygoers. Drivers take note, it’s quick into town and just outside the Congestion Zone.
