Property in Lewisham
Lewisham is an old pre-Saxon settlement that grew rapidly in the Steam Age, but whose centre was wrecked by a V1 bomb in WW2. Evidence of its former glory can be seen in the wide avenues of stucco townhouses leading from the centre towards Brockley and along Lewisham Way. Roomy Edwardian homes surround Lewisham Park and line the roads leading up towards Blackheath.
Lewisham schools
Younger children can attend John Ball, St Saviour’s Roman Catholic or St Mary’s Church of England primary schools. Northbrook, Prendergast Hillyfields College, Deptford Green and Christ the King Sixth Form College are all close for secondary age children. St Ursula’s Convent in Greenwich scores exceptionally highly with Ofsted, while independent options include Greenwich Steiner School, Colfe’s, Blackheath High and Riverstone.
SE13 shopping and leisure
Lewisham Shopping Centre has a Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer Outlet plus many high street favourites (Hennes, Boots, New Look, Next and WHSmiths). There’s heaps of parking (with reasonable rates) and access onto the pedestrianised high street and market. Catford’s Broadway Theatre is minutes away, the Albany Theatre holds lots of unusual events (shows, workshops, music) and the nearby Brockley Jack is an award-winning fringe theatre. You can tap into Greenwich, Blackheath and Deptford’s best attractions easily from here (02 Arena, Greenwich Market, Up the Creek Comedy, Maritime Museum, Greenwich Observatory, Greenwich Royal Park etc).
Galleries and studios include Lewisham Arthouse on Lewisham Way, APT in Deptford, Stark in Lee Green and various Goldsmiths’ art student overspills in New Cross. Limelight Gallery is based in Lewisham Library and the Deptford arm of Cockpit Arts—a designer-maker group, is in Creekside.
Public transport from Lewisham
Pretty damn good. There’s an overground (London Bridge, Charing Cross, Waterloo East, Cannon Street) the DLR (Deptford Green, Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Tower Gateway and Bank) and a bus terminal with numerous services. Nip into the City or central London in, quite literally, minutes.
