Property in Telegraph Hill

Stacked with the chunkiest Victorian terraces imaginable, houses on Telegraph Hill are usually spread over 3 enormous floors. Now a conservation area, these uniformed villas were mostly built around 1871 by the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers—yep the one’s who later built the school. Kitto Road (on the hill’s peak) has a short terrace of townhouses with fabulous London views. You’ll pick up smaller (but by no means small) terraces along Bousfield, Arbuthnot and Drakefell Roads.

Plow’d Garlic Hill (as it was called in the middle ages) became known as Telegraph Hill when a semaphore telegraph system was built there in 1795 to transmit signals to the next telegraph station in line. These signals stations could send messages between London and ships in the English Channel much faster than a rider on horseback. The telegraph systems were responsible for conveying vital information to Wellington and Nelson in the battles of Waterloo and Trafalgar.

Telegraph Hill schools

Edmund Waller and St Jame’s Hatcham Church of England primary schools serve the immediate area. The ‘Harry Potteresque’ Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College is on Pepys Road and is one of Lewisham’s most oversubscribed secondary schools.

SE14 shopping and leisure

The semaphore hut has long gone, but a lovely pub on Dennett’s Road is called the Telegraph in tribute. Find very good food, a warm interior, live music and a varied selection of beer—we recommend the Sunday lunch here and at The Royal Albert—another fine pub in New Cross. The Amersham Arms in New Cross also does great food, has a garden adorned with bunting, live music, comedy and a party atmosphere due to being stuffed with Goldsmiths’ students. The newly refitted Albany Theatre stages a fantastic range of children’s and adult’s shows, events and workshops, has a state of the art auditorium and café with art gallery. The London Theatre in New Cross is another exemplary fringe theatre staging everything from Chekov to stand up comedy. Many art groups and quirky galleries (again courtesy of the student population) are sprinkled about, while the beautiful green spaces of Telegraph Hill Park (it’s spilt into two distinct areas) offer tennis courts, ponds, a playground, fabulous views and a very good children’s One O’clock Club. Catch the monthly Farmer’s Market and the annual Telegraph Hill Festival held each spring. The Telegraph Hill Centre on Kitto Road is a community space (holding dance and music classes for children and adults) and enjoys the rather good Hill Station Café.

Public transport from Telegraph Hill

You’re spoilt. Nunhead (Victoria, Blackfriars, Farringdon, City Thameslink and St Pancras) is two mins away, while New Cross Gate (London Bridge, Victoria, Canada Water, Shoreditch, Hoxton, Dalston and Highbury & Islington) is under 10; both stations fall within Zone 2. Many buses whizz along New Cross Road, travelling into London and across to Greenwich and Blackheath.
