A great option for people who want to tap into the charms of neighbouring East Dulwich but pay considerably less for a property. Nunhead has rows of pretty Victorian terraces and some outstanding semis and detached homes along Linden Grove and overlooking Peckham Rye Park. First timer buyers can get a foot on the ladder in any of the flats found here (WW2 bombs were discharged in the area, so a bit of social housing exists) while property developers have seen Nunhead’s potential and a few good-looking new apartment blocks have sprung up.
Ivydale, Hollydale and Rye Oak Primary Schools all score well in league tables. Secondary schools include the Harris Academies at Peckham Rye (separate sex schools, the boys’ school being brand new), or Kingsdale Foundation School in Dulwich Village if children meet the entrance criteria.
SE15 shopping and leisure
Nunhead has a good high street with a revered wet fish shop (Soper’s), a bakery (Ayre’s), 2 butchers, a grocer and a fab deli on Consort Road (Frog on the Green). Beauty salons and hairdressers (Envy, etc) plus useful newsagents are abundant. Brayard’s mini-supermarket sorts out the necessities, while a Tesco Local on Rye Lane, Morrison’s in Peckham or Sainsbury’s at Dog Kennel Hill are all close. Fun can be had in the Old Nun’s Head pub with music nights or in any of the ace gourmet pubs fringing Peckham Rye Park. Our hot tip is Ganapati (Holly Grove, SE15); it scored 9/10 from the Guardian in 2009. From Nunhead you can walk to SE22 and the Bellenden Road area for heaps of cafés, bars and shops.
Public transport from Kennington
Is sorted. You’ve Kennington and Oval tube stations (both Northern Line), nearby Elephant and Castle (Northern and Bakerloo lines) or Vauxhall (Victoria Line) tubes. Buses won’t take long to reach any part of London from here either.
