Estate agents aren't funny...
No, they're probably not. Except Viv Soan in our office. She's very funny. In fact, Viv's a comedienne and one half of the founding duo at the tremendously popular Pull the Other One gigs.
Viv remembers literally walking into our lives in 1998, "That's a funny story in itself! I was standing outside the Roy Brooks office a fair bit that year waiting for buses. I kept seeing the "staff wanted" sign on the window and one day I walked in. Felicity was talking on the telephone and the other phones were going mad, ringing constantly. Every now and then Felicity would put down the receiver and try to talk to me, but would be interrupted buy another call. In the end, I started picking up the phones and just copied what Felicity said!"
Since training in drama at Goldsmiths', Viv has toured Europe with a theatre troupe, worked as a stand-up comedienne at the Comedy Store (alongside Ade Edmundson, Keith Allan and Ben Elton) and played saxophone in comedy cabaret with Rich Hall, amongst others. She has two grown-up daughters with her husband of 25 years and Pull the Other One partner, Martin Soan.
The couple began putting comedy shows together because, "We were getting tired of traveling a lot for work and decided to make something happen locally." Beginning 3 years ago, armed with no budget whatsoever, Pull the Other One soon began drawing impressive crowds at the Ivy House in Nunhead. These days, many evenings sell out in advance and Viv is immensely happy to be putting something positive back into the community,
"We've now got 3 graduates working for us: a graphic designer, a journalist and a photographer. It's really great to be giving these young people relevant and exciting work."
We love Viv's cabaret evenings so much that we sponsored them from the beginning. Our office jollies have improved remarkably, and if you haven't been, you are in for a treat. Up-and-coming acts are followed by seasoned performers such as Jo Brand, Arthur Smith, Omid Djalili, Phil Nicol, and Frank Sanazi. Tickets are a reasonable £10 in advance (£15 on the door) and are sold from our office!
We're offering a pair of tickets for the 30th September show, please email firstname.lastname@example.org by 28th September and we'll drawer a winner.
