Peckham’s architectural bones are ancient. The Holly Grove conservation area retains some divine Georgian and Regency homes all having deep gardens. Consort Road is lined on one side by beautiful Regency villas (with some truly wonderful interiors and gardens) while Montpelier Road, Kings Grove, Trafalgar Avenue and Asylum Road are filled with pretty terraces and some ravishing period townhouses—particularly along Trafalgar Avenue and Asylum Road. Elm Grove is a remarkable mish-mash of architectural styles and Choumert Square is a secret, gated lane of the prettiest cottages imaginable (complete with walled communal gardens). For all its infamy, Peckham should not be overlooked. There are many fine period homes to be had here and location-wise, SE15 has a lot going for it. A furious redevelopment of the sink estates is ongoing, with work finished close to the high street. New homes are well designed, light and often enjoy balconies, terraces, gardens and parking. More development is planned to improve housing and remove the run down North Peckham Estate entirely.

Peckham schools

Primary schools include John Donne, St James the Great, St Mary Magdeline, Peckham Park and St Francis among others. Older children can attend the Harris Academies (at Peckham Rye or central Peckham), St Thomas the Apostle College, Deptford Green or St Micheal’s in Bermondsey.

SE15 shopping and leisure

SE15 shopping and leisure Peckham Pulse is a superb leisure centre with gym, pool, café and many therapy and exercise classes. Next to it stands Peckham Library, winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2000. Since receiving council grants to renew and uplift the Bellenden Road area, a host of bars, cafés and independent shops are flourishing. Turner Prize winner Anthony Gormley, artist Tom Phillips and designer Zandra Rhodes designed bollards, street furniture, shop frontages and lighting along Bellenden Road (Gormley’s studios were once in Peckham, Phillips’s still are). Many other artists work and live here; there are studios in an old chicken factory, the railway arches and also along Sternhall Lane. South London Art Gallery, Camberwell College of art and nearby Goldsmiths’ University are close, while many smaller galleries and pop-up shows keep the area vibrant.

A multiplex cinema, Primark, Argos, Holland & Barrett, WHSmith, Chinese supermarket and Morrison’s are all found among afro-carribean hairdressers, meat stalls and grocers on Rye Lane. There’s a Farmers’ Market outside the library and probably the best Indian in the world on Holly Grove —Ganapati.

Public transport from Peckham

Peckham’s VERY close to town. Queen’s Road trains (Zone 2) are 7mins from London Bridge and around 35 from Victoria. Peckham Rye station is excellent (also ins Zone 2) and connects with the aforementioned plus Farringdon, Blackfriars, City Thameslink and St Pancras.
